Flash is finally going to hit the iPhone (No word on how soon yet). Even though it may not be in the form that we originally wanted it in.

Adobe has some new features to reveal to us that are expected in Flash Professional CS5.  Unlike originally expected flash will not be in the form of a Safari plugin. Flash Professional CS5 brings new features that will allow flash programs to be re-packaged to run natively on the iPhone and be distributed over the app-store. This opens a  whole new venue, allowing developers to easily develop their applications if they are comfortable using flash. We may also see some pretty neat app-based interactive web sites. However, as one iPhone blog stated “a tsunami of craplets may ensue.” Adobe has already released about 7 of these flash applications on the app-store to try out (Chroma Circuit, Trading Stuff, Fickleblox, Just Letters, South Park, The Roach Game, and Red Hood.)

Also, the release of Flash Professional CS5, will also allow Windows users to develop flash applications for the iPhone as well! (Although you still need a developer certificate from apple to distribute the software.)

No word yet on the official release date of Flash Professional CS5 but public betas are expected to be released later this year. You can check on that here.

In a recent developer conference Adobe announced that the next version of Flash Player will actually run in smartphones and ofcourse in all Macs and PCs. This is the first time a version of the Flash will be supported in both computers as well as mobile phones. We will no longer need to use Flash Lite and pretend we are happy with it. The best part…you can just download Flash and install it in your smartphone and no longer worry whether you phone will come pre-installed with it.

This next version of Flash, version 10.1 will only run in Symbian Series 60, Android, Windows Mobile and Palm webOS. Whooops! I don’t see iPhone OS in the list.

Digg is to finally get its own iPhone app, after co-founder of the website Kevin Rose unwittingly let details slip.

Rose was a speaker at last week’s FOWA (Future of Web Apps) conference in London, and while he said nothing about the application in his guest speech, he did mention the app to two bloggers in an interview afterwards.

Nobody knows about that

An eagle-eyed Arnt Eriksen and Thomas Moen spotted Rose playing with the application on his iPhone before the podcast interview started and quizzed him about it when the video was running.

His response: “I cannot show that off yet. You’re not even supposed to know about that… nobody knows about that.” He then sheepishly allowed them to keep the segment in their podcast.

Currently, Digg has its own mobile version of the site, but it has yet to get an official iPhone app.

Category level

Also in the interview, Rose mentioned that Digg is to change the way it aggregates articles on the web, saying that multiple homepages could be in the running.

He explained to Eriksen and Moen: “We have always had this universal homepage which we are promoting stories too, but now we are going to start promoting it at a category level to get more longer tail content. It’s completely redesigned for us.”

While we’ve heard plenty about the vast numbers of iPhone and iPod applications being downloaded from the App Store, Apple hasn’t said much about their value, meaning curious observers have been playing a financial guessing game.

Bernstein Research in the US has had a crack and estimates that apps alone pull in up to $110 million (£69 million) per quarter for Apple through the iTunes/App Store channel.

Slice of the pie

Considering the company’s most recent quarterly earnings of $8.34 billion (£5.23 billion), that guess puts iPhone apps at around 1 per cent of the total. Still, it’s not bad for revenue that’s essentially skimmed off other developers’ sales.

The report’s author says why this is significant nonetheless: “We believe that the App Store is fundamentally changing the dynamics of the smartphone industry by migrating it to an application-centric device, where first-mover advantage is significant.”

Fertile ground

In other words, foster a marketplace where consumers have a vast choice of software with easy access, and the likelihood of anyone buying an iPhone before, say, an Android handset shoots up as the selection grows.
