This wine presentation cabinet comes from the Austrian company, Creosa. Its design draws upon the “display rack” concept familiar in retail. In this example the base is made of concrete and the presentation area is made of acrylic.
Like music? How about violins? This should keep you interested.

For over 500 million years… or better… 500 years, the form of the violin has deviated from the baroque style very little. This violin right here, it’s different. Made by designer Hopfgartner Gerda to spearhead a new age in 4/4 design, this is indeed the “Gavari” Semiacoustic Violin. Created in co-operation with a professional Viennese violin maker to assure perfect dimensions and sound criteria.

Gavari violin back

The Gavari semiacoustic violin was made with virtually no change from a classical violin in the areas of geometrical curvatures and material thickness in the cover and the soil. Playing this instrument requires no education beyond that of the average violin player.

The design aesthetics of this violin are inspired by giant boats. Boats and yachts of the 50s as well as feminine curves and “sundry corset outlines” of the Baroque, Rococo, and Biedermeier ages.

Inspired by the Giving Tree, this project called the “Savior Bud” latches on to trees (one of Earth’s most generous living things) and uses it’s natural recycling processes to obtain water. In a simple process which basically involves collecting the moisture from the leaves and emptying it out into containers, the Savior Bud takes one more step toward acceptable living conditions in Africa.

As our intrepid designers note, Africa is plagued twice by their hydration situation. Twice because not only is their water supply low, but the water that’s available is often undrinkable and polluted.

The process goes like this:

1. Find a broadleaf tree with lots of leaves.

2. Opening the Savior Bud like a giant clamp, surround a few leaves, and release. The Savior Bud should now be containing the leaves like you see in the picture below, sort of like a greenhouse.

3. In about four hours, the leaves will have produced about one cup of water. Turning the bottom of the bud like a faucet will release the water to be put into a separate container for drinking.

Additional details below. I wouldn’t mind one of these for camping or something like that, would you?

Also, C-3P0 not required.

Dutch Design Week: Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Bas van der Veer has won the prize for best project at the school’s Graduation Galleries exhibition, which opened in Eindhoven yesterday.

Van der Veer presented two projects: a rainwater storage butt with an integrated watering can called A Drop of Water (top and below), and a biodegradable packaging system for plants called Bioplastic Planter (above).

A Drop of Water

Thousands of litres of water disappear via the rain pipe into the sewer during a rain shower. At the same time, an average household uses litres of drinking water to irrigate the garden. Bas van der Veer combined these two concepts in A drop of water: a rainwater butt with an integrated watering can. The light grey water butt is attached to the rain pipe, so during a rain shower the watering can is automatically filled. Once it is full, the rest of the water flows over into the water butt, so serving as a reservoir. “In this way, it is easier for the users to water their garden using rain water instead of drinking water from the tap.”

Bioplastic Planter

Bas van der Veer believes in the future of biodegradable materials. “After use they serve as raw materials for the natural world.” Van der Veer devised the Bioplastic Planter: a biodegradable container that makes the transport and planting of young trees easier. The Planter supports the tree after it has been planted, against the wind for example, and ensures that it does not have to be clamped by stakes and rubber bands. When the tree’s roots begin to shoot, the Bioplastic Planter biodegrades under the influence of light, moisture and mould. The material then becomes feed for the tree. In this way, it automatically returns into the cycle of the natural world, and it serves the natural world rather than damaging it.

Ok, ok, I admit it, this is for lazy people who want to develop big muscles, but still, it’s a nice concept for somebody that would like to grow some fast, easy muscles. Based on the amazing new workout system dynamic inertia, shake weight has released the shake weight for men, a more powerful and intense workout for men to achieve bulky and ripped muscles in just 6 minutes a day. Some say it’s gay, some say it’s like masturbation, others think it’s a tool for lazy people, and some others, just find it cool. Personally I would buy one of those, it’s too simple not to use it.

To understand Iz you need some background: the Turks love this drink called Ayran or Airan, which is blended yogurt and water. They make it in a special kind of way, and as poetic as it may seem, using the Iz leaves a flower pattern on the user’s palm. The steel body of the cocktail maker is complimented with a blue intricate-pattern elastomer seal.

To use it, simply pour in the ingredients and seal the blender. A few good pumps to the top part with your palm effectively churns the contents (using spring action) and leaves a flower indent on your palm. With the help of the strainer fitted in the neck of the Iz, airan is filtered and purified from its cream. I think the Iz is a pretty versatile design and can be used to churn out some pretty heavy-duty cocktails.

Simple, yet effective design, with a drinky utility, what can be more cool than that?
